I have wanted to share some of the things we were unaware of as Special Edition Buyers, that we now have come to learn as a Special Edition producer. I hope this will be eyeopening to many who, like myself, have experienced the various delays and changes that small book boxes have had in the past.

Many hurdles occur in the process of creating special edition books from scratch. It is a long process. A process that is usually a year in the making before any preorder is even revealed. Just the process of getting approval from an author or publisher, to create said edition, takes six months on average. Then you have to acquire artists that can work within your contractual timeframe. Often artists have waitlists 6-14 months out into the future. If you want a specific artist, you have to wait that additional time period. Often it takes an artist longer than anticipated to finish an art piece. That adds to the process. Thereafter, in most cases, you have to have the art approved by the author. We have waited as much as three months to have an art piece approval verified by the author. All of this is before any reveals or orders open. Often delays occur in this process that are financially costly to small book boxes and postpone order dates. This causes more financial expenditure out of pocket on the part of the book box. So, a lot of effort and money has gone into every edition before you even hear about it.

One of the biggest current troubles for small US based book boxes is the printing industry. In our experience, and from recent updates from other small US based book boxes, the following situations have become industry norm. We began working with our desired printers at the end of last summer for all our current projects. After a year of planning, designing, and verifying with the printers our various projects; the printers doubled the price on every project. This happened three times, with three projects, and always after the preorder price was announced to our customers. For instance: the Gold Primal additions were verified to be a cost where we could keep the price at $150. The day after our announcement, the printer informed us that the same order from the day before would now be $212 dollars per copy printing cost only. No art, no royalties to the author/publisher included. Three times this same scenario has occurred. Thus, we are changing printers for all our current projects. Printers are pushing to make it impossible to cover the cost of production; let alone grow as a business. We are working tirelessly to find honorable printers that don’t cheat small companies such as ours and also work in leather. Very few printers, the world over, produce leather editions. That makes our printer options even more limited than for hardback editions.

Despite all of these obstacles, we are still fully dedicated to bringing you editions that equal our vision while not charging you an arm and a leg to do so. Thank you for your support, and thank you for reading our update.
